As I sit here looking back at 2014 and contemplate what I learned, what, if anything of significance occurred, I suddenly realize the first week of 2015 has already come and gone. This gets me wondering, did anything of significance happen this first week of 2015? What exactly in the world? More importantly, what happened in my little piece of this world?
2015 is set to be marked by extreme cold and snow sweeping across the country, a television season premiere, and an escaped lion…just to name a few.
After two weeks of a wonderful Christmas break spent with family, the first day back to school was followed by the first snow day of the year (so much for mom’s break).
The much anticipated return of Downton Abbey, Season 5 means, more Crawley family drama and more costumes to drool over. We find ourselves in 1924 and there is consternation, both above and below stairs, about the recent election of a Labour government ( this cannot be sitting well with Lord Grantham). Lady Mary has yet to choose a husband but Lord Gillingham seems to be the front-runner and he proposes they become lovers and go away together for a few days (she may want to think this over carefully, given what happened the time time she had a lover. I don’t believe her mother is up to dragging another body from room to room in the middle of the night, poor Mr. Pamuk). Downstairs, Thomas continues to pressure Baxter to provide him with gossip but it’s Molesley who counsels her to reveal her secret to Lady Cora. A fire breaks out in Lady Edith’s room.
This year is already seeing a wave of new regulations being published in the Federal Register as the Obama administration unveils 300 (that’s right, 300) new rules in the first seven days of 2015. Happy New Year AMERICA!
Users of iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches spent nearly $500 million on applications and in-app services during the first week of the year. That’s the highest weekly volume recorded by Apple since the company opened its AppStore seven years ago.
Gadgets You Thought Were Dead Are New Again at CES 2015, Record players: Vinyl has been making a comeback in the last few years, with album sales climbing. Hipsters who crave that nostalgic vibe but still want to pair their music players to wireless speakers over Bluetooth can head over to Ion Audio. The new turntable also has a USB port — and RCA inputs for you olds out there.
A Rare Butterfly is Half Male, Half Female. An unusual butterfly that is half male and half female recently caught the eyes of a volunteer at a butterfly exhibit at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Venezuelan fast-food lovers are mourning the disappearance of McDonald’s golden staple: the french fry. Have the authorities been contacted yet?
And finally, while I decided to take a tech break and hide from not only the cold Chicago winter and all social media it seems a lion escaped from the zoo. Well at least according to a text I received asking if I knew anything about the escape. Figures, the day I decide to take a break from the world a lion is roaming the neighborhood.
Can’t wait to see what next week brings!
